Empowering Youth

SHAURI YAKO COMMUNITY YOUTH SUPPORT CENTRE AT A GLANCE

SYSC delivers programs and services to promote healthy communities and encourage sustainable poverty alleviation by empowering at-risk children and youth.

We work in the three informal settlements of Shauri Yako, Kiawara and Manjego near Nyeri, Kenya, where 60% of the population is under 30 and employment and education rates are low.

Our programs and services focus on job skills training and public health. We also run an informal school and community drop-in centre.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

I am the eldest in a family of 7.  I went to school up to class 6 and then dropped out due to hunger and poverty. In my family finding food was a priority, which left little or no time for education. It was very difficult for my mom to put food on the table, so I started working at a very early age to try and help by doing all kinds of odd jobs, including house help.

At age 17, I took part in a free six-month tailoring skills training program at SYSC.  Afterward, I took a micro-credit loan and started a dress and curtain-making business in my rented room here in the Shauri Yako community. Today I am earning enough to pay rent, support my mom and 6 siblings, and I am also training them in tailoring. Discovering SYSC changed my life!

JOB SKILLS TRAINING

We provide vocational and life skills training and arrange apprenticeships in the high-demand fields of tailoring, welding, masonry. These are some of Kenya's highest-demand fields and suitable for self-employment.

INFORMAL SCHOOL

Our informal school offers free education opportunities for children of displaced families and refugees who lives and arrive in the communities we serve. While primary school is free in Kenya, it remains out of reach for many due to hidden administrative costs & pressure to contribute to household income.

COMMUNITY HEALTH

We run temporary clinics and train-the-trainer health education initiatives in partnership with local organizations to improve community health  HIV/AIDS testing and education and reproductive health information are key priorities to give youth agency over their lives.

COVID 19 RESPONSE

SYSC has suspended our programming so we can support our community through the pandemic. We are distributing soap, running food banks, installing water tanks and checking in on those most at-risk.

Informal settlements are not easy places to slow a pandemic.

Housing conditions crowded, there is no running water, and few can afford masks or sanitizer.  Most work informal economy jobs that are perilous at the best of times. Staying home now means hunger.

When we recover from this crisis, it is time to address the long-standing systemic neglect behind these issues.

all funds donated to our regular programming are currently being directed to our COVID efforts
